Choosing the right dance school can be tricky! Below are some points to consider and we hope will be of help to you in your search.
One of the best ways to gauge the merit of a prospective dance school is to chat with other students or parents and carers who already attend the school. Word of Mouth is the best form of advertising. Ask about the teachers, communication and standards. You will soon get a feel. We are always pleased to received phone calls and emails with questions. As well as our website, we also have an active Facebook Page which is worth a look too!
Can you observe a class
Are you able to observe a class in action before joining the school? Is a trial class available? At VBDance students are welcome to join for a trial before committing to the full term. We also hold open classes at the end of each term where friends, family and prospective new pupils are welcome to observe a class in action. If you would like to observe a class mid term, do speak to the principal and we will arrange this for you. We also have videos available on our website where you can get a feel for the ethos behind the school too.
It is extremely important to find a school with suitably qualified dance teachers. All teachers at VBDance are either ISTD or RAD qualified. These teaching qualifications ensure that staff are knowledgeable and accurate in the syllabus they teach, but also understand and have knowledge in Child Development, Dance History, Health and Safety, as well as Lesson Planning and Evaluation.
The principal of VBDance is also an accredited teacher with The Council for Dance Education and Training. VBDance staff take pride in their own professional development and attend teacher workshops, classes and summer schools to ensure they are kept up to date with developments. Teachers regularly meet with the Principal to discuss how the classes are going and students progress. The Principal regularly observes classes taught by other teachers too. They remain in close communication to ensure standards are kept high.
Do the staff have professional dance experience? Between us, we have danced in South East Asia, Europe, The Olympics Opening Ceremony, Main London Theatres on Cruise Ships and In Pantomines too!
We take the matter of Child Protection very seriously and have a policy which is available to read on the website. It is important you check that ANY after school activity provider has one in place! All VBDance teachers have up to date CRB/DBS checks and Public Liability Insurance. They are also First Aid Trained.
Query the size of classes. At VBDance we aim to keep our class sizes sensible so that we can provide quality dance training in a safe learning environment. We do not believe in ‘cramming’ students into classes.
As well as the class fees, what are the other extra costs involved? At VBDance we aim to keep fees reasonable so that the students may embrace as many opportunities as possible at the school. Additional costs are for dance uniform, examinations and the biennial school production.
VBDance are proud to teach the syllabus of one of the worlds leading dance examination societies The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. We are able to offer exams in Imperial Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre, Jazz and Tap Dance. Examinations are not compulsory at the school. What other opportunities are available for the students at the school? At VBDance, children may just wish to attend a regular weekly dance class. However we also organise other opportunities for those VBDancers who are interested:
- Biennial School Production in a Professional Theatre
- ISTD Examinations
- ISTD Holiday workshops/classes
- Visiting Company workshops eg English National Ballet
- School Trips
- Holiday Clubs
- Summer School
- Associate Classes
- Royal Ballet School Outreach Class
- Competitions and Festivals
We hope you have found the above helpful and good luck in finding the right dance school for your child. Of course, if you would like to find out more about joining VBDance, then do give The Principal, Victoria a call on 07841 922 631 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
